Mite Boxes/LWML Mission Grant
Do you know that the coins and bills you put in your Mite Box support mission grants that relieve suffering, share Christ’s peace, and spread the Gospel here in Michigan, in our nation, and around the world? Based on the Biblical account of the widow’s mite (Luke 21: 1-4) the Mite Box is intended for regular contributions of “mites” – offerings above and beyond your support for your congregation. Mite Box contributions amount to millions of dollars that fund district and national mission grants which are selected by delegates at district and national conventions. Every woman in this congregation is a member of LWML. If you would like a Mite Box see Georgia Lang or Kathi Eichinger. Then place your Mite Box wherever you can feed it: on your dresser, office desk, or kitchen counter; in the laundry room or car, etc.
One of the grants chosen at the LWML National Convention this past June was Thirst to Learn: Bible Books for Africa’s Children which is a $100,000 grant. The Holy Spirit gave the disciples power to preach the Gospel in the languages of the people at Pentecost. Today he uses the Lutheran Heritage Foundation (LHF) to translate books that explain Scripture to people around the world. Books are given free of charge to the churches and individuals who need them. Africa has 1.2 billion people; over half of those souls are waiting to be introduced to their one true Savior, Jesus Christ. Islam has made huge inroads into the continent with 500 million people bowing to Allah, while others continue to follow the traditions of their ancestors. However, Christianity has grown from only 8 million in 1900 to over 631 million in 2000. Translations of A Child’s Garden of Bible Stories and Luther’s Small Catechism have been completed and distributed in places like Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Sudan. The parents in these countries now have the resources they need to tell their children about Jesus and how God made the world.
Many African church bodies have thriving Lutheran schools, but teachers had no textbooks from which to teach their religious classes. However, once LHF gave them Bible story books in their own languages, the students could learn about their heavenly Father. They also are able to keep the brightly illustrated books, which are often the first books they own, and share with their families. The same book which teaches about Jesus may also be the one that teaches the student to read.
Lutheran missionaries and church leaders in Africa have witnessed a “thirst to learn” about the Savior and have a need for easy-to-understand Lutheran books, printed in the languages of the people, to teach parents and children the Lutheran faith. With the money from this grant, the Lutheran Heritage Foundation will continue their mission of translating, publishing, distributing, and introducing Lutheran materials throughout Africa to enhance the growth of the church.
Happy 80th Birthday LWML!!!
The year 2022 is an exciting year for the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. It started in 1942 and in that time much has been done, however there is still more to do. In thanksgiving for 80 years of LWML, we are being encouraged by the National LWML to share God’s love by blessing others with 80 something.
Our Savior’s Ladies Guild/LWML has decided to collect 80 food or personal care items for the Midland County Emergency Food Pantry Network. It is a cooperative effort of area churches and other organizations to provide food and supplies to people in Midland County who have emergency needs and are living near or below the Federal poverty level income guidelines. The Network encompasses a number of special programs and eight pantries. We will be collecting donations until May 1, 2022. Thank you for your donations.
