Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22) We are saved by the grace through faith, not by our own works. Yet works are evidence of our faith. God has given his Word that we may hear, read, study, and apply it. In this same chapter James wrote, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1:27). Jesus said the greatest command is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12: 30-31). We are “doers of the word” when we love and serve God, and when we love and serve others. We are “doers of the word” when we keep ourselves unstained from the world. We are “doers of the word” when we share the good news of salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Verse for today: Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:10)
