I thirst. (John 19: 28) These words indicate the physical suffering of Jesus. Among the things contributing to death by crucifixion, dehydration would be included. His body longed for life-giving water. But his request went beyond the physical. Jesus’ thirst was to do His Father’s will, to fulfill the Father’s plan of salvation that was foretold through the prophets. If he had not fulfilled each, Jesus would not be who he claimed to be, the Son of the living God and the long-foretold Messiah. But He did, and he is! Gospel verse for today: Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done. (Luke 22:42) It is finished (John 19:30) These are words of triumph. The work of atonement was completed, it was accomplished. On the cross the cost of sin was “paid in full.” No more animal sacrifices need be made by the Levitical priest. No work, no sacrifice on our part need be made, because nothing we could do would suffice. “We have been made holy through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:10). In Christ’s perfect sacrifice, the forgiveness of sin is secured. The message of the cross comes to people only through the Word of God. “It is finished.” Thank you, Jesus! Gospel verse for today: Pilate said to him, “Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me unless it had been given you from above.” (John 19:10-11)
